Nutfield Priory Wedding Photography

Today I was at the lovely Nutfield Priory in Redhill, Surrey to photograph a wedding. This time of year the weather is unreliable of course but it was great to see that we had some blue skies and not too many clouds. It was a relatively small wedding, about 60 guests and so there was plenty of room for a nice relaxed mingle before the meal.

Here’s a few favourites from the day.

I love shooting the preceremony getting-ready photographs. It’s nice that the bride and groom get to see a little of each other mornings.

Wedding Photography From The Ground Up

There are many things that contribute to an interesting and varied wedding portfolio. Years ago I used to have an old film camera called a twin-lens reflex. It had one of those viewfinders on top of the camera that you looked down into, holding the camera at waist level. I was often struck by how different the images looked than those shot at the more traditional eye level. People looked more in proportion to their surroundings and you would notice things in the images that wasn’t often immediately apparent in the pictures that you would typically get using the smaller 35mm camera.

Although digital has long surpassed film for most uses, I still like to get that low angle during weddings for variety. Also it’s a great way to photograph children as the camera is literally on their level. I’ve pretty much perfected the art of knowing what will be in the viewfinder without looking through it. This is a fun technique as often the subject isn’t aware you are shooting.

Here are a few favourites shot from a low angle, pretty much all shot without looking. Combined with normal perspective images and other ways to shoot (blog post coming soon), it’s a great way to capture the wedding day from an unusual viewpoint.

Berkshire Portrait Photography – Rob James

Today I was asked by close up magician Rob James for some images to update his portfolio. Rob’s one of the country’s leading magicians and has worked all over the world at weddings, corporate events and parties. Hyperbole aside, he performs incredible things at his fingertips right in front of you that will have you doubting your senses.

It was a nice change for me to photograph in a slightly different style – a bit more editorial in feel and with some interesting locations inside and out. The instinct when photographing people like Rob is to use props from their expertise in the images. I have been guilty in the past of photographing musicians with their instruments, artists leaning on a canvas, sculptors framed by their creations etc. I decided to take a different tack with Rob and discard the playing cards and dice and photograph him as himself, if that makes sense. We shot some frames in the studio before heading for a dilapidated farmyard a mile or two away.

I’ve photographed quite a few magicians now – it’s an interesting niche market – I have a website devoted to this style of portraiture here.

Here’s a few favourite images from Rob’s session.

Winter Wedding Photography

Today is the autumn equinox when day and night are roughly the same length. From here on in, it just gets darker and when it rains heavily like it did today, it can be a pretty gloomy prospect for your wedding day. Or is it? I often get asked about wedding photography for weddings in the autumn and winter. How is the photography affected by the light, or lack of it? Is the winter wedding album not as good as a summer wedding album?

Technology has changed things an awful lot in the last few years, cameras and lenses have never been so good. The professional wedding cameras we use can produce beautiful images in little more than candlelight without the encumbrance of a tripod or auxiliary photographic lighting. In my opinion, wedding albums produced from winter weddings are just different from albums from summer celebrations. I often show prospective couples winter wedding images because of the pictorial difference. There are usually far more summer wedding images around and I like the contrast that the wintery wedding pictures provide. Images shot from October through to, say, March are often warmer, more intimate and have a cosier feel to them. Of course December weddings often have a backdrop of Christmas trees and other festive decorations which add to the feel.

In my view its essential to choose an experienced wedding photographer if your wedding falls in the autumn and winter months. Your photographer needs to have a few years under his or her belt to be able to handle the low light and fast changing conditions with ease. Many times I have heard stories of couples who have opted for a cheap photographer or friend with a camera to cover their winter wedding and been sorely disappointed. Ive also been asked to rescue some badly photographed winter wedding images for brides who have economised on the photography on their big day. Whilst good wedding photography is not cheap, arguably winter weddings are a time when it might be considered essential  to spend a little more on the memories. Computers are capable of amazing things these days but have their limits. This brings to mind Red Adair’s famous quote – “If you think its expensive to hire a professional, wait until you hire an amateur.”

Here’s a selection of some winter wedding photographs. Personally I love the challenges at this time of year and the beautiful results so different to the hot days of summer.

Surrey Bridal Fashion Shoot

Here’s a few favourite images I shot recently for Village Brides, a local bridal shop. The location was Cranleigh, just south of Guildford. Of course I have been photographing wedding dresses for as long as I have been photographing weddings but with two models and 14 dresses it was a little different from my normal wedding photography. It was great fun of course, no pressure of the kind you normally get on a wedding day but equally as a commercial shoot there is of course the pressure to make sure the work gets done in the time allotted (it was) and also that the client is happy with the images (she was) :)
