Claire and Michael’s Cain Manor Wedding – A little cine film of the day

A couple of months ago I posted that I had been out on a wedding to help my friend Rob shoot the day. I took the opportunity to fulfill an ambition to shoot a little Super 8 cine film of the wedding as well. I have always loved the look of film footage, so different from today’s HD video and I always thought it looked great for weddings where traditionally the film is treasured for many decades after the event. Shooting Super 8 is notoriously err…unreliable. The cameras you can get nowadays are typically 30-40 years old. The focussing is pretty much guesswork and you get little bits of flare and debris in the camera shows up in the footage. It’s all part of the charm of course and adds to the ‘look’ of the film. I picked up a Canon 514 cine camera from Ebay a while ago now and shot a test roll to make sure everything was working OK. Kodak still make cine film but about the only place in Europe you can get it processed is a lab in Berlin. The film took a whopping two months to get back to me but it’s kind of nice compared to the instant gratification of digital video (and stills come to that). And no, I have no plans to shoot video – I am sticking to stills. By the way, if you like the idea of a cine film of your wedding, check out Andy’s work over at cine8.co.uk Andy was kind enough to help me get prepared for this little project with lots of advice. It was fun to make and I feel it always helps, creatively speaking, to change gears once in a while and shoot something different.

Hope you enjoy it.

Wedding Photography – Before and After

It’s been a while since I last did a ‘Before and After’ so I thought it might be nice to look at this image from Nadine’s wedding to Nick at Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot, Surrey.

As I am sure you know, digital images come out of the camera pretty flat and bleurghh, which is actually a good thing when photographing events like weddings. To state the obvious you only get one go at a wedding so most professional photographers prefer the images to be low contrast where possible and to set up the camera to produce a digital file which is flat and bland so that it acts a little like a blank canvas during the post-processing.

If you set your camera up to produce images with contrast and saturation, it’s difficult or impossible to lower the contrast and the punch in an image if that’s what you want to do afterwards. Some images look nicer with a lower contrast ration than others. That’s why no kind of automation works very well when processing the pictures. Much like the actual taking of the images themselves, the effectiveness of the picture starts with the eye of the photographer. Each picture needs to be individually assessed and processed appropriately. In this digital age of course there are far more choices than there used to be when film cameras were used. The last time I checked I had 17 different ways to convert my files to black and white for example.

All my images from everything I photograph get tweaked and polished on the computer in this way. You can see the difference in these two photographs. The picture has been cropped (bits chopped off the top and bottom) to remove distractions. it’s been ‘warmed up’ a bit and given a little texture to remove that digital feel which I felt was appropriate to this picture. An interesting border completes the image. Of course not every photograph would benefit from this kind of treatment but I like to think it makes Nadine look even more beautiful on her wedding day :)

Sarah and Chris are getting married.

Sarah and Chris tie the knot next month at Pennyhill Park Hotel and today we met for a pre-wedding meeting and to shoot some pictures. We shot a few in the studio and headed up to the abandoned sawmill that I shot at last weekend. Again, it’s a great location for outdoor portraits, I found some new angles and got some cool images. Chris and Sarah were great to work with, the wedding should be fun, I am looking forward to it.

Here’s a few favourites from the pre-wedding shoot, starting off with a couple of studio pics.

Thursday May 6th 2010

So I hope you are all well today on ‘The Day of the Great Choosing’ as Stephen Fry so eloquently puts it. I took a walk over the polling station today and shot a few Hipstamatic iPhone shots on the way. More of my phone images right here.

Engagement Photography Session – Michelle and Tom

Michelle and Tom are getting married in June at beautiful Buxted Park and we met today to shoot some pictures. Engagement shoots are always fun as it’s a chance to take our time and shoot some unusual pictures in a different style than on the wedding day.

A couple of miles from my studio is an old abandoned sawmill. It’s been derelict for a few years and I thought it would be a cool place to shoot some pictures. Thankfully Tom and Michelle didn’t look at me like I was mad when I suggested the idea. The buildings and undergrowth made an interesting backdrop, here’s a few favourites from the shoot.

Emma and Richard’s Clandon Park Wedding Album

I photographed Emma and Richard’s wedding at Clandon Park near Guildford a while back and Richard came to collect the wedding album today. They chose a beautiful black natural grain leather for their art album which is 12″ x 24″ in size (opened up). I had to take a couple of iPhone snaps before it left the nest forever (sniff). It’s so nice to see my wedding images in a handmade wedding album. I know that it now becomes their first heirloom together and they will enjoy it for many decades to come. Don’t get me wrong – digital technology is an amazing thing but there is nothing like holding your wedding story in your hands, turning the pages and sharing it with family and friends long after the memories of the day have become a bit foggy.

Lainston House Wedding – Katie and Graham

Katie and Graham’s wedding was at St. Peter’s in Winchester town centre and afterwards at the fabulous Lainston House Hotel. Like yesterday’s wedding, the weather was beautiful and it was a joy photographing the wedding.  Katie and Graham were fun to work with and I could see they really enjoyed the day. I bumped into the very hung over Graham at Lainston in the morning but I am pleased to say he scrubbed up well for the important part of the day. Katie looked fabulous (see below) and Lainston was a terrific place to spend a beautiful spring afternoon.

K & G are on honeymoon in Mauritius right now and their complete gallery will be uploaded on their return. If you were at the were at the wedding, please drop me a line and I will send you a mail when the complete gallery is uploaded with a 15% discount voucher on prints and products.

Monkey Island Wedding – Victoria and Richard

So there I am on our Easter holiday in Barbados and the day we are due back I hear this ludicrous sounding story about volcanic ash. Turns out the story was true of course and after being stranded for an additional week (I know, I know, it’s a rough life) we managed to get home eventually. In the meantime uppermost in my mind was the worry of missing my booked weddings – it would have been the first time in sixteen years.

One benefit of being a working professional is that I have a great network of fellow professional photographers that I am a part of. Thank goodness for the technology in today’s phones, even on a far flung Caribbean island I was able to access my calendar and contacts via Her Majesty’s interweb. My thumbs were a blur, texting like a teenager to rearrange things and I managed to get two great photographer friends lined up as replacements. Fortunately after a few uh, interesting travel adventures we managed to get home by Thursday just in time for the weekends weddings.

It was with huge sense of relief that I set off for Victoria and Richard’s beautiful wedding at St. Michael’s and Monkey Island in Bray in Berkshire. Fuelled by caffeine and adrenaline I really enjoyed the St. George’s day wedding. The weather was great, V and R were a joy to work with, very relaxed about the whole thing. The day, like all weddings, went far too quickly. Here are a few favourite images. The rest will be uploaded as soon as Richard and Victoria have seen them.
