The End Of The Road for me

This weekend the Mrs. and I made our annual pilgrimage to the End Of The Road Festival at Larmer Tree Gardens in Dorset. Although children are welcome at the festival we happily deposited the loinfruits with grandparents, chucked the tent and some sleeping bags in the car and headed off down the M3. We had a great time, the weather was pretty much perfect. A little rain about 1am on Saturday morning meant  the late night drunks retired quietly. I must admit I am probably getting a bit old for camping at festivals as I do like a good nights kip these days :)

The festival is pretty small by todays standards. They have a max. of about 5000 people. The first year of the festival there was less than half that there and it had a brilliant atmosphere. The bands that play are not mainstream acts either, it means that you hear music you wouldn’t normally experience live and if you don’t like it you can move on to something else around the corner.

Each year they decorate the woods that surround the stage areas. stringing the trees with miles of fairy lights and organising fairly random things. There is a library in the woods – bookshelves built around trees and places to sit and have a quiet read. There’s a few art installations along the pathways, sometimes pretty small so it’s an interesting place to walk around and take it all in. As well as the music there is a cinema tent and a comedy stage so it’s a fabulous weekend away.

I didn’t take as many photographs as I would do normally. After a summer of shooting weddings it was nice to wander around and absorb what was happening without the need to record it. That said I did of course shoot a few pics along the way (what’s a blog post without pictures)?

Here’s a few favourites:

We had brilliant weather – there were amazing photogenic skies over the festival all weekend.

One lovely thing about festivals is getting yourself a nice ale from the beer tent and lying comatose on the grass whilst listening to your new favourite band. It’s here I invented a new genre of photography :) photographing festival goers as they step between lifeless bodies on their way back to their little patch of turf. Well, it kept me amused for half an hour anyway. Here’s a few pics from the ground up.

I’m a huge Richard Hawley fan so I was pleased to see that him and Jarvis Cocker were performing a DJ set on the Saturday night. After a very slow start when the roadies and then the festival staff failed to get the equipment working, the two auld grandads finally got their gramaphones sorted.

With the late start, Hawley saves the day by handing out cans of Guinness – and very nice it was too.

I shot a bunch of other photographs on film so I am looking forward to getting those developed. We are looking forward to going next year already. Back to work for now though.

Orchardleigh House Wedding Photography – Gemma and Luke

Wedding photos at by Simon Kemp

Congratulations to the lovely Gemma and Luke who got married today at Lullington Church and held their wedding reception at nearby Orchardleigh House. It was to work outside my usual area today and lovely to photograph at Orchardleigh House, a venue I’d not worked at before. Having shot over 600 weddings, I have worked at a tremendous variety of places over the years and it’s lovely to come somewhere fresh and to photograph at a location for the first time.

It was a pretty relaxed day; Luke and Gemma were great to work with. It was marvellous to see them celebrate their special day with their extended family and friends. This time of year is great (my own wedding was in September) and if the weather is kind as it was for Gemma and Luke’s wedding then a great time is usually had by all.

Here’s a few favourites from the day. If you were at the wedding and would like to know when the complete gallery of pictures is uploaded **CLICK HERE** and I will drop you a line.

Trunkwell House Wedding Photography – Sarah and Darren

Today I was at the beautiful 12C church of St. Mary’s in Silchester. It was a beautiful morning, a little cool (not necessarily a bad thing on a wedding day) and I am so glad the weather held out for Sarah and Darren’s wedding and the reception at Trunkwell Manor House in nearby Beech Hill. I love this time of year, my own wedding was on September 5th (note to self: buy anniversary present!), the change from summer to autumn is in the air and the light is slightly different than it was a couple of weeks ago.

I love photographing at St. Mary’s in Silchester. The church is right by the walls of the Roman city of Calleva Atrebatum and is an interesting place to get married due to it’s connectiions with the past. The marquee at Trunwell House is always fun to photograph at and the gardens behind the house are a lovely place to hold a wedding reception.

Here’s a few favourite wedding photographs from the day. The complete gallery will be uploaded in about 10 days. If you **click here** I’ll send you an email when that happens with a link to the gallery.

Baby Photography Reading – Harrison

Here’s baby Harrison. I photographed his parents wedding at Silchester House in 2006 and I photographed his big brother Jack a couple of years ago. It was great to see the family in the studio again and update the family heirloom that these kind of pictures comprise. Here’s a few favourites from the session.

With Dad, Martyn. This is a favourite image from the session, it would look great in black and white as well. I am a fan of photographs of children with their parents- I think when your baby reaches the same age as you it’s a wonderful thing to see images of you with your parents. Perhaps it’s to do with knowing where we came from but I think it’s a sad thing when you have no photographs of your parents when they were young.

Wedding photos at by Simon Kemp

So Harrison is of course at that stage of power crawling just before the transition to walking (via staggering around the room hanging on to things). I love this sequence. Very often with babies, the developmental stages they go through pass so quickly. As a baby portrait photographer I love capturing these fleeting moments. And I just love his face in the first image :)

New Mill, Eversley – Alison and Will’s Wedding

Alison and Will got married today at the lovely St. Andrews Church in Sonning, just outside Reading. Will stayed at the Bull Inn, right next door to the churchyard so there was no excuse for being late. It’s a pretty impressive church – you can feel the history oozing from the walls. Afterwards we were off to the New Mill in Eversley. I first shot a wedding there about ten years ago and it’s a favourite location, tucked away off the main road and right up by the river.

I started the day off at Alison’s parents house just down the road from the church, it’s always nice to get some images of the preparation from the day. I think it’s also cool that the bride and groom get to see a little of each others morning as well. Here’s a few favourites from the day. If you attended the nuptials and would like an email when the complete gallery is uploaded, ** click here**.
